Day 21: Ireland – Killarney

lovely sunrise view from my bedroom window in Kenmare

I ended up seeing most of the Ring of Kerry yesterday, so today’s plan was just to meander through the Killarney National Park on my route northwest to my next accommodation in Tralee, north of the Dingle Peninsula.

up and over this pass towards Killarney
the landscape becomes stunning as soon as you enter Killarney National Park
Just down from Ladies View viewpoint. The road was thru lush forest with little glimpses of the lake peeking through the trees so I stopped at the first patch of dirt I saw, followed a little trail and found this magnificent view!
The Torc Waterfalls, “a 20 metres high, 110 metres long cascade waterfall formed by the Owengarriff River”. I climbed the couple hundred stairs to view upper falls too.
On to Muckross House, donated to the nation in 1932 it became the site of Ireland’s first National Park. Beautiful gardens and grounds…

My next stop was to “see” the Gap of Dunloe, another extremely narrow and winding mountain pass. I would have liked to drive it but it’s ‘not encouraged’. Local signs say it’s forbidden but I think that #1 it’s an ploy by the pony cart drivers to keep all the tourist money for themselves, and #2 it’s an effort to reduce traffic as it’s an extremely popular thing to see and is often only a cart-width wide. There’s reports of many a car getting stuck up there.

So I drove out to park at the famous Kate Kearney’s cottage, a 150 year old establishment that the original Kate made famous with her powerful moonshine. I started to walk up the road but there was nothing of interest to see in the distance I could walk and the many passing pony & trap drivers were quite unpleasant, barreling down the road calling for pedestrians to get out of the way. I decided the Gap was something better left to my imagination so I returned to my car and continued on.

As I therefor had a little time left in my day, I thought to get a head start on tomorrow’s sightseeing and so drove onto the Dingle Peninsula to see Inch Beach, a beautiful 3-mile long beach that people can drive on, just like Daytona Beach! Set in a windy location there’s lots of windsurfers and kite-boarders in addition to the regular beach goers. It was a rather chilly afternoon so there weren’t too many of the latter!

Famous Inch Beach

And then it was time to find my accommodation. Los Molinos is a B&B set on a residential street out in the country. No matter, I had my wine & salad fixings and a lovely room so I was good for the night.
