We had a morning off today so I went for a long walk along the beach, passing fishermen bringing their boats back ashore after a morning of fishing, and many surfers trying to catch the small waves breaking just offshore. It’s a long sandy stretch so probably walked about 3 miles in total.

Our gang gathered at 12:30 pm for a bus ride to a nice beach for our lunch, then on to Dutch Fort in Galle. Dutch Fort isn’t just the fort but the whole point of land sticking out from the bay of Galle. The first little fort was built by the Portugese in 1588, then taken over and expanded by the Dutch in 1648. It’s a lovely place to walk, full of shops and restaurants, guesthouses and hotels, decaying old buildings and restored colonial treasures. We had several hours here, staying for dinner (on our own), before heading back in the dark to our hotel.
