Day 2: Kahului, Maui

Courtesy of jet lag I enjoyed both a long sleep and an early wake up. By 6a I was on the deck checking out Maui as we drew into the port. On my way aft to find coffee I discovered some new areas of the ship I missed yesterday: the gym which was chockers with exercisers, the little library which has a daily Sudoku and crossword printout; and the 13th deck, the exclusive aerie of the Haven passengers. That’s where all the butlered suites and private lounges & dining rooms are. By 8am I’d already walked more than I had in a full day at home!

We docked in the main city of Kahului; not really the best location for quasi-lame sightseers. Unfortunately there weren’t any shuttles into town from the ship so I was back to limping by the time I made it out of the dock area. I rested and bought some supplies at a drug store and called an Uber to take me the mile to the bus depot. Both the driver and I weren’t very happy with the experience: him because it was such a short ride and me because it cost $8!

From the depot myself and several dozen cruise ship passengers crammed onto a local bus for the hour ride to Lahaina. The latter portion of the route is right along the coast with gorgeous views of the ocean and Lanai – a cheap, short sightseeing trip!

Lahaina is an old fishing village, now filled with tourist shops and tour promoters. It still retains some old Hawaiian charm and is a fun place to wander, if one’s able. I wasn’t particularly, so after a few photos I took another bus a short distance to the local swimming pool – a big 50m pool and free entrance(!) to do a mile swim. Thankfully the arms are working just fine….

This is all one humongous Banyan tree

Back on the excellent bus system to Kahului, then onboard for a very late lunch. By 4p I was about to lie down for a rest when I realized I was missing the Aloha Polynesian Dance Show!!! What was I thinking? Back up to Deck 12 for that:

Next up was meeting the Solo Cruisers at 6:30p for Happy Hour. As a group we went to the early entertainment: “We Will Rock You” musical revue, then dinner in the main dining room at 8:30p. Some energetic souls continued on to dance in the Spinnaker Club to 70’s disco but I had enough fun for one day and called it a night.

Oh, and a note on my Hawaiian sightseeing: Mom and I took a trip to Oahu, Maui, Kauai & The Big Island a few years ago and were extremely thorough in hitting all the main attractions on each island so I felt no pressure to sightsee Hawaii on this cruise at all. I just planned some easy activities for my 3 days here while my foot continues to heal.
