Day 4: Kauai

A lazy morning today as the ship didn’t arrive to the port of Nawiliwili until 9:30am. Ideally I would have slept in but my curtains were open so I awoke with the dawn about 5:45am. We were just off the coast of Oahu then so we are backtracking north again from the Big Island.

It was okay weather when we finally docked at the pier but by the time I got my rental car at 11:30am the grey skies opened and dumped a lashing of rain. That was a quick shower but a persistent drizzle/rain continued all afternoon. Needless to say, kayaking was out so I just drove the North coast to the very end, stopping to take a few pictures of the crashing surf.

Hwy 56 ends at the famous Na Pali coast. One can’t see the grandeur of this area from the road, let alone on a day like today but Mom & I were lucky enough to take a helicopter tour over it a few years ago and the cruise ship is supposed to do a sail-by tomorrow morning.

The drive back was tedious – the poor weather and heavy sections of traffic was compounded by the snail-slow speed limit. Coming from an area where the average limit is 50 mph, going 25mph was torturous.

I dropped the car off at 5pm. I suppose the drive beat staying on board all day but I’m not sure by how much. After a nice hot shower this solo cruiser decided to dine solo and have an early night.

Tomorrow: At Sea!
