Day 6: Split, Croatia

Our first destination is already a different country – Croatia! I had been here before but that was many moons ago while working on yachts and I really didn’t remember anything about it so I signed up for a Guruwalks tour.

We met at 10am for a concise but fact-filled trip through the old town, which was originally completely enclosed within the ancient 4th C. private palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. When Rome fell in 5-6th C. people moved inside the old palace’s walls for protection and there the city remained until the 11thC when overcrowding caused them to finally start building outside; ergo, much of the Roman infrastructure remains to this day.

Artist’s rendering of Diocletian’s 300AD palace. The water has long since receded, replaced by the modern esplanade, shops and marina
The lower entry gate and “basement” are now trinket shops
Mishmash of original royal apartments (left, now museum), Diocletian’s mausoleum (octagonal-now church), and Middle Ages-present era homes
Dark columns from Egypt so 3500 yrs old, pale columns Roman 1700 yrs old, and Greek bits here and there (add another couple hundred years)

After the tour, on the suggestion of the guide, I headed up a steep road for a nice overlook of the City. It turned out to be a glorious day for walking so I kept on going for a couple of miles through Marjan Park and ended up doing a loop up to the top of the hill where a huge flag flies proudly over Split, then returned back down knee-breaking stairs to the esplanade.

I thought to pick up a few snacks for enjoying with my sundowners on my balcony so I popped into a local grocery store. Only to find it built in and amongst ancient columns and arches! Talk about living with history!

Back to the ship for a very late lunch and a rest before meeting up with my new FB friends and BC friends for dinner. It’s all assigned seating for dinner so we had to make a special request for our own table but now we’ve a table of 8 of people we’d like to sit with rather than random strangers.

Taken this morning but a nice shot of the ole girl 🙂
