Day 13: Utrera

Left 7:40a and was immediately into fields. The sun made a brief appearance over the horizon then just as quickly hid behind a layer of clouds filling the sky. Rain is predicted for later on….

Several large groups of Sunday cyclists had me stepping off into the fields to let them pass. All gracious with a “Bon Dia”.

13k & 10:30a I arrived at Los Molares, and being Sunday, the town was out for its coffee and toast. It turned out to be a good-sized town with its own 14th C castle right down town. I didn’t try to see it as my heart was with the abandoned one I saw yesterday…

The exit out of town was on a paved road, fortunately a quiet one, past industrial farm buildings, plowed barren fields, small land holdings, and ramshackle houses. My audiobook came out after the first hour.

19k found me entering the urban wasteland of the outskirts of Utrera. The 3k walk to my pensíon was not inspiring and my room is like a monastery cell. I only paid $24 for it so I can’t complain.

Utrera had not endeared itself to me, what I saw of it on the walk to my hotel so when it started to pour with rain in the early afternoon I was happy to stay inside with my book, chips and ramen noodles.

The rain also made my decision regarding tomorrow easy = bus to Seville. I’m going to skip the last day’s walk, called “A long drudgery with no distractions” by a recent pilgrim as this rain will turn the path into glue. That’s okay, I feel I’ve seen some amazing places this walk and whatever I’ll miss by walking I can catch from the bus’ window. I also hadn’t planned any time at all in Seville, originally going to walk right to the bus station to hop down to Malaga so this will give me a day to play tourist in that pretty city.
