Day 31: Marrakesh

Our last day of the tour, and it was a Free Day too. Having seen what we did yesterday on our walking tour there’s wasn’t much that really interested anyone. Saaid suggested the Jardins Majorelle so we all jumped on that and 12 of us booked online for the earliest time left – 1:30pm.

That left the morning for sleeping in, checking out the mall next door, having a burger at McDonalds for lunch (Ramadan means a lot of closed restaurants) before walking en masse to the park, 20 minutes away.

The park was basically the garden of the Yves Saint Laurent house in Marrakesh. Small but beautifully maintained. There was also an excellent Berber museum on the grounds (no pictures allowed) with superb displays of costumes, tools, jewelry. The Berbers are one of the oldest ethnic groups with a history tracing back over 9,000 years. Saaid’s tribe is one of 30, his having approximately 26,000 members.

After the garden we checked out the YSL Salon next door – a museum of his fashion designs. I thought it was rather interesting but most of the others were quite underwhelmed.

And lastly we all got together for a wonderful farewell dinner at a fancy restaurant nearby. Lots of stories and memories of our trip were shared along with effusive thanks to Saaid for making our tour such a great experience.

That winds up my Moroccan adventures and is the penultimate day of my trip. Tomorrow begins the trek home with a mandatory overnight in Madrid in order to make connecting flights. Until next month….!
