SWCP Day 54: Salcombe > Torcross

Another brilliant day! Weather was absolutely perfect – sunny with a cool tempering breeze.

The day started with me rushing to catch the 9am ferry (I wasn’t worried about it until I realized I could make it if I tried). Jogging with a backpack is a clumsy endeavor!

Bye, bye Salcombe!

Once on the eastern side I had to walk back down the river through lovely woods to round Gara Point to head north again on the south coast.

On the coast the path became a little wilder, with a heavy surf and some lumpy cliffs to traverse. I also ran into some traffic on the trail: moooove!

The black bull took a little persuading to make room for us to pass. Fortunately he was a gentle giant.

I walked with this couple for a bit. They’ve been knocking off little 3-4 day sections of the path for the last 15 years!

A little bit of scrambling
Did I mention it was a stunning day?

At 5.5 miles I came to Prawle Point, Devon’s Southernmost Point. Turning the corner the terrain softened and the next 4 miles were probably what most people envision walking the coast path would be like: flat, rural, bucolic, gentle, and right by the sea.

10 miles in and I reached Start Point. No idea why it was so named, and the signpost is more of a 3/4 thing but oh well.

Start Bay was calm as could be with small coves and long sandy beaches.  The last 4 miles was a mild rollercoaster of ups and downs but with smooth grass or gravel underfoot so easy hiking.

I dropped into Torcross with 45min to wait for the bus to Dartmouth so had time for a refreshing 1/2 pint at the beachside pub!

I’ve got 3 nights booked in Dartmouth. Tomorrow, as long as the rain isn’t too heavy, I’ll bus back to Torcross and walk into Dartmouth.
