SWCP Day 68: London

Sightseeing day #3. Started with the extremely popular British Museum. I arrived shortly after opening but then so did 1000’s of others. I headed right to the Medieval Britain section to see the Sutton Hoo horde. After that the shrieks of squealing schoolchildren drove me to abbreviate my visit to a few highlights then I escaped.

Sutton Hoo Mask. 1 of only 4 complete masks have survived from early Anglo-Saxon England
Sutton Hoo belt buckle
Lewis Chessmen – 12th C. A missing piece still in private hands resurfaced in 2019, said to be valued at £1 million!
Benin Bronzes from 16th C.
Crowds!!

I was ready for lunch when I left the museum and thought I’d tried my luck down at Covent Garden. I thought it was going to be tacky but it was quite lovely.

Some street scenes

My knee was bothering me again (I hadn’t worn my little elastic brace the last couple of days) so I wasn’t up to shuffling around a museum so I decided to see a couple of smaller sites. First was the cloisters of Lincoln Inn’s Chapel. I know nothing about them other than I’ve seen them in several British TV shows, ie Poirot, and wanted to see them myself.

Next was Temple Church. Made famous in The Da Vinci Code, it is the historic London headquarters of the Knights Templar.  What I hadn’t realized is that one of the Knights, William Marshal, negotiated the Magna Carta in 1215 between the Barons and King John, and ensured its survival by reissuing it in 2016 and 2017. There was more info on the Magna Carta than the Templar Knights!

And that was Day 3. One more day and I’m off home.
