Another Rest Day. My foot was very slightly better this morning so I ventured through the Roman walls into the old town for a look around. Although it was 10am it was a chilly 8°C and the streets seemed to be shut up tight. A few people here and there but it was still too early for most to be out.
I took refuge in the cathedral which was surprisingly warm and sat for the end of morning Mass. It gave me an excellent opportunity to enjoy the splendor of the building and the serenity of the service.
I didn’t have much wandering left in me so I turned back, stopping for a nice hot chocolate along the way. By 12 pm the sun was out and the streets alive with people.
I went out again at 6pm, determined to walk at least a few meters atop the walls….From Wikipedia: Lugo is the only city in the world to be surrounded by completely intact 3rd C. Roman walls which reach a height of 33 to 49 feet along a 1.3 mile circuit ringed with 71 towers.
As I was exiting through the Camino’s archway I bumped into 3 pilgrims I know who were just arriving in town! And then 30m further outside the grocery store I bumped into Cheung, who’ve I’ve seen since Day 1. It was lovely to see these familiar faces and bittersweet as I won’t be seeing them again.
I had reserved a bed for tomorrow in Melide, which is where the Primitivo meets the Frances camino with the hopes that I’d be ready to walk some of the shorter distances possible on the Frances. Unfortunately my heel hasn’t healed (ha, ha) enough for that and why push it when I’ve only a few days left in country? So I will honor my booking in Melide, getting there by bus, and then Saturday taking the bus further to Santiago to wait there for a couple of nights until it’s time to fly home.
With this decision I’ve left myself with a nice solid week’s walking on the Primitivo to return to. And so, I think it’s time to wrap up this blog until my next adventure….
