SWCP Day 57: Dartmouth / Brixham

Whew, I needed this rest day. It’s been 2 weeks since my last and my legs and joints are protesting just a wee bit. I’m glad I switched plans with yesterday though as I’d rather be a tourist in the rain than a soggy hiker!

And it was raining when I started out this morning – I was somewhat soggy boarding my morning ferry. “Going to sunny Greenway?” asked the boatman. I was, and it was! 30 minutes up the River Dart was Agatha Christie’s Greenway house. Her summer home for almost 40 years, it was given to the National Trust by her daughter in 2004(?) with the proviso it stays as is. All the family’s furnishings, collectibles, china, knickknacks, etc. were to remain in situ so it really was a window into how the Christie family lived.

I took the return ferry to Dartmouth, had a quick lunch, then took the tugboat ferry over to Kingswear to catch a bus to Paignton. I will pass Paignton tomorrow but I wanted to see a newly released movie and a day off was a perfect opportunity. “The Salt Path” is based on a memoir of a couple who walked the Coast Path at a desperate time in their lives and I very much enjoyed reading the book. It had some wonderful cinematography of the coast and I recognized many places so I’m glad I saw it.

The theatre was right on the beach promenade so I decided to knock off a few miles of urban walking from tomorrow then bused back to my hotel in Brixham for the night.

Not all my rooms are nice! Here’s my army green cave!!
