SWCP Day 58: Brixham – Babbacombe

My hotel didn’t offer breakfast until 8:30am so instant coffee and oatmeal in my room would have to do and I set out at 7:45am. I exited Brixham along the water’s edge which led into trees before reaching ancient woodlands (so said the sign). Surprising to find such nature right on the town’s doorstep, it was a peaceful “green” recharge before the pavement ahead.

After walking through the park at the top of the headland above, the path descended as a strip between a caravan park and the railroad, slowly entering civilization again. At a busy beach promenade I stopped for a coffee then walked another mile to reach a bus stop so I could hop over the portion I walked yesterday.

I restarted my walk in Torquay, which was interesting with a big marina but I struggled to find an attractive photo op so I took one of the clock tower just to have something….

Soon I was rounding up out of Torquay, getting a Stairmaster-like workout on the well-trimmed, garden-like Path.

Whereas Paignton (the section I walked yesterday) was rather down-at-heel, these next 6 miles were definitely in a higher tax bracket. Some lovely homes and fancy hotels. This forced the path onto the road quite a bit (privacy, my dear) and through more impenetrable woods before ending at Oddicombe Beach. Not quite literally, one could climb the zillion stairs up to Babbacombe, or…. one could take the Cliff Railway!

Those 4 hikers took the stairs!!

I’m staying at an inexpensive resort hotel. I think I’m about 20 years under the average guest age. Dinner was available, from 6-7pm(!). I sat beside another single woman whose accent was so strong I couldn’t understand her. Fair to say, I have to repeat myself regularly as my accent tends to bring on blank stares, lol. Anyway, everyone else has obviously been here for a while but they welcomed me into their midst and the food was tasty. I’ll see my new friends at breakfast!
