Hadrian’s Wall Path, Day 1

This morning I took the train from Newcastle west to Carlisle, my base for the next few nights. As the forecast seemed dry-ish for the next few hours (rain is predicted all week) I decided to get a head start on tomorrow’s walk by doing the last half today so I dropped my bag at the hotel and caught a taxi out to Burgh by Sands to walk a short stage back to Carlisle.

That little acorn is the marker for my trail
And away I go! Fields and hedgerows…
And curious cows
12th C. St Mary’s Church, built on the hill where a Norman castle once stood and is the only church right on the wall
Not that I saw any Wall today, all had been scavenged as building material for fences and buildings. This remnant in a wall apparently reads: 20th Legion
Lots of road walking
And hard stones
Thick vegetation walking above the River Eden leading into Carlisle
And just a mile from finishing the rain finally came…only lasted 15 minutes!
