Bolzano
I had a nice leisurely start this morning, emerging from my hotel around 9:30am. Right around the corner from me is Piazza Erbe where there’s a daily market. Not sure if it’s for tourists or locals but everything looked gorgeous and all along the street there was the clink-clinking of espressos being served at the many cafes.

The museums were closed today so I decided to take the Funivia del Renon (gondola + railway combo) up to Sobrabolzano. Definitely should have had an earlier start as people were lined up out the building, plus doing the serpentine Disney-line inside. Guess everyone in town had the same idea….

It can be reached by car but this is a fun but touristy way to access the high plateau. Unlike the ones I visited in Ortisei, this one has whole communities and towns up here.

At the top there was a scrum to board the railway which still uses circa 1907 rail cars.

The goal of all this was to see the Earth Pyramids. It couldn’t have been a nicer day and the 45 minute walk there was delight.

Back to Bolzano around 3pm for a late lunch and siesta before making my evening ‘passeggiata’, a slow stroll through town…
