Montenegro/Albania: Day 3

Kotor

My last day of freedom 🙂

I join my tour this afternoon so today’s my last day to set my own agenda.  I started with an early morning hike up the Ladder of Kotor. It’s a zigzagging stoney path built in the 18th century to connect the top of the mountain with town. It has 72 switchbacks in its 4 mile length but as I had a time crunch due to having to check out of my hotel at 10am I just did an hour up & back = 5 miles.

Fortress walls around town extend up the mountainside

There’s such steep slopes to the hills here that the sun doesn’t hit town for 2.5h after sunrise so it remained nice and cool for the whole walk.

Back to the room, packed up and left my luggage in their storage room for a couple of hours. Breakfast to go of traditional spinach burek (like spanakopita) and cappuccino in the park then back through the City Walls into Old Town. I realized I’d seen enough of shops and cafes and as I was still in my gym clothes and needing a bit more exercise I walked north along the pleasant waterfront towards Dobrota and beyond. Going to be another 10+ mile day!

Good old thunderstorm started building behind me so I kept my eyes open for a suitable cafe to duck into for cover if needed. Luckily there is no shortage of those! People here love their food and coffee!

Despite the grey skies, thunder, and lightning virtually no rain came except a few refreshing sprinkles.

My new hotel is across the bay and down from Kotor, too far to walk really. It’s pretty much all by itself, sandwiched between the road and the sea. Literally… you step off the road into the lobby and one step too far off their patio and you’re swimming!

My tour had an intro meeting at 6pm, first time traveling with this company that there hasn’t been a variety of ages – we’re all old folks, lol. We then piled in a minibus to have a quick tour of Kotor and dinner. A late night so not sure how the blogging will go if this continues…..

Stage set up and concert going on
Whole different vibe at night!
