Montenegro/Albania: Day 7

Kolašin/Podgorica

A very leisurely start this morning, 8:30am breakfast, 10am departure, so I had time for a swim in my bathtub!

We said goodbye to our minibus last night and today we piled into four 4×4 SUVs for a day of riding around backroads and rough routes up and down the Maganik mountains. We were a bit squished and it was a bit bumpy but there were beautiful views.

We stopped at a little monastery and church for a coffee break prepared by our drivers.  The church is interesting as it was built in the 1990’s by a grieving father after the death of his son. There used to be a school but there’s no children left in the area and there’s only 2 Russian nuns living in the big monastery.

Hours of driving this narrow mountain road and we run into road works! After some honking of horns and some negotiating they backed up quite a ways and let us pass

There is a small number of chalets and cabins in the area but most are summer residences, very few permanent residents as they can get up to a meter of snow in the winter and it’s a pretty remote area.

We had a nice lunch riverside, then all highway to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, which we reached around 3:30pm.

A few hours to chill, then an orientation walk around town at 6pm. Podgorica is known as a pretty boring capital city… it seemed pleasant enough but as we’re leaving again in the morning I won’t have a chance to find out.
